Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 #NL#Release Date: April 28th, UK#NL#Directed By: James Gunn#NL#Starring: Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Michael Rooker, Kurt Russel, Sean Gunn, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki #NL##NL#On April 28th, I witnessed James Gunn and his amazing team catapult the MCU into the stratosphere. The first incarnation of Guardians has always been one of my favorites. Seeing this group of nobodies transform the MCU and elevate the universe has been very exciting for me. In the first movie the characters are laid out, giving you only a glimpse of their lives. These characters were so interesting I wanted to know more. The sequel gives me more of what I was looking for. James packed so much heart and soul into this movie, no one will leave that cinema without a full heart, and if you're like me, a tear in your eye. #NL##NL#Pre-warning this is a spoiler-full environment throughout.
Heavy
Vol 2 picks up with the Guardians slightly after the events of Vol 1. James has said it doesn’t follow the MCU timeline, so these events are before Age of Ultron. This group has developed into an (almost) well-oiled machine. Their relationships with each other are growing. You can instantly see how far they have come since last we saw them. James Gunn has centered this movie around "family", which is exactly what this group is. They are not the Avengers who have their own agenda, these guys are a family unit. #NL#
Mr. Blue Sky" while the rest of the Guardians are fighting a rainbow-spewing monster, is an incredible opening. It's very similar to the open of the first one, where Quill is dancing around to "come and get your love". They're fighting in an attempt to protect some batteries. These batteries they were protecting are later stolen by Rocket, for no other reason than because he could. This sets of a chain reaction, as now the Guardians are hunted by the Sovereign. In an epic fight scene were the Sovereign attack the Guardians with an army that essential is just drones. They are destroyed in an instance by an unknown ship, which really pisses Ayesha off.
This mysteries ship belongs to Ego and his companion Mantis. Ego straight away introduces himself as Peter’s father. A god-like Celestial who can manipulate matter and its consciousness to form planets. His companion Mantis, is an empath who can with one touch feel what that person is feeling, she can also reverse their feelings. Ego explains how he hired Yondu to pick him up and deliver him, which he never understood why Yondu kept him. Peter knows exactly why " he was a skinny kid, could fit in small places, good for thieving". Peter’s first impression of his father is sketchy. He has a lot of questions that he wants to be answered, and agrees to go to his home planet. This isn’t before a hilarious story Gamora recounts of how Peter used to tell people his father was David Hasselhoff.
On the other side of the Galaxy, Yondu and his group of Ravagers are in this seedy galactic brothel. It looks like Yondu’s past is catching up with him when Starkar Ogord exiles Yondu from the ravagers for child trafficking and keeping Peter. Who would a thought a bunch of low life Ravagers have a code? They clearly do as Yondu is stripped from his patches and promised to never receive a Ravager funeral. This exile sparks a reaction in his crew, lead by the hilarious Taserface, in which they start to believe that Yondu isn’t fit to lead them anymore due to his weakness for letting Peter go after the events of the first movie. His weakness certainly is shown when Ayesha hires the ravagers to capture the Guardians, retrieve the batteries and bring them to her. Yondu retrieves the batteries but refuses to take them back or kill the Guardians. This proves Taserfaces theory’s and decides to take over as leader. Yondu tries to stop them but is hurt when Nebula shots his fin on his head and shots Rocket. The Ravagers along baby Groot take them, prisoner.
On Egos home planet we get to see the evolution of Ego, right up to him meeting Peters mother and not only impregnating her but also planting his light into earth’s core. Peter has it revealed to him that he isn’t just human but also half celestial, which is why he could hold an infinity stone in his bare hands. Ego shows Peter the extent of his powers by creating the light within him which he can manipulate into creating whatever he wants. Peter is obviously star struck with this new revelation about himself, but Gamora doesn’t quite buy into the perfect life that Ego is offering. This just makes Peter want it more, possibly more than the family unit he already has. After their little fight, Gamora goes to contact Rocket to get them out of there but is rudely interrupted by Nebula.
Back on Yondu’s ship which has been taken over by Taserface. Anyone that still held allegiance to Yondu has walked the galactic plank and sent into space. Nebula has made herself very comfy with the Ravagers and stops them from killing Rocket and Yondu. Making it clear that they are worth more money alive than dead, she wants 10% of what they get and a ship. While in a prison cell Rocket fills Yondu in on the return of Quill's father. Which brings the question up again "Why did you not return Quill?" Yondu answers with the same thing Peter said " he was a skinny kid, could fit in small places, good for thieving", this sounds like a statement that Yondu drilled into quills head as a kid. Knowing what Yondu knows about Peters father, he decides it's time to break out and get to Peter. He doesn’t elaborate on the details but gives the impression that Peter and the rest of the Guardians are in danger. He enlists the help of Baby Groot, in a hilarious sequence to get a prototype fin from Taserface. Once he finally gets the fin Yondu is able to use his arrow again and takes out the whole Ravager crew, except Kraglin who wanted to be back with his captain. Before the ship explodes Taserface gives the Sovereign his quadrant's and asks them to pass on the name of the person who sealed his fate, this makes the receiver burst out laughing which is the last thing he hears before the ship explodes.
Nebula has taken the ship for one reason, the same thing she always has on her mind, she is going to kill her sister. On Ego’s planet, she has tracked Gamora down and attempts to kill her. This sequence goes to show how strong Gamora actually is, something I have been waiting for since the first one. After a hellish fight, Gamora finally gets out of Nebula why she is so hell bent on killing her. When they were children Thanos used to make them fight each other, for every fight Nebula lost she would have body parts removed and enhanced ones put in their place. It even went so far into having her brain removed and enhanced. This makes Nebulas hatred more understanding and justified, as all she ever wanted was a sister.
While on Ego’s planet Mantis and Drax have become close, in their own unusual way. She comes very close to telling Drax what's actual going on but gets interrupted by Gamora. She finally has no choice to tell him when Ego takes Peter to expose the real purpose of him finding him. Ego explains how he traveled the galaxies planting seeds which can terraform them into expansions of himself. These can only activate with the power of two Celestial's, which is why Ego went round impregnated women all over the galaxy to try and find the one child who carried his gene. He would use Yondu to collect these children, and when they didn’t have the gene he would kill them. Yondu couldn’t do it anymore, which is why he kept Peter. Under the influence of Ego’s power, Peter gives himself up to Ego and helps him active the seeds. As these seeds start to explode on the worlds they are on, Ego reveals that it was him who put the tumor in Peter’s mother which killed her. This instantly breaks the hold Ego has on Peter and he fights back. #NL##NL##NL#As the Mantis explains to Gamora and Nebula Ego’s real reason for Peter being there, they are joined by Rocket, Yondu, Baby Groot and Kraglin. The Guardians are finally reunited and travel to Ego’s brain at the planet's core, where they are greeted by the Sovereigns. With the help of Nebula, the Sovereign are very quickly destroyed and the fight to destroy Ego is on. Peter fights Ego with his new celestial power in order to distract him while Groot puts a bomb near his brain. While everyone boards the ship to get out of there, Rocket only has one space suit that will save either Quill or Yondu. Rocket who has a deep understanding of Yondu pleads with him to go with them. Yondu knows after the bomb explodes Peter is going to need help getting out of there and he scarifies himself to do that. As the bomb explodes Peter is lifted away by Yondu who delivers the heart-wrenching line " He may have been your Father, but he was never your Daddy". This absolutely crushes Peter, as he finally releases that he had a father this whole time.
The final act of this movie is Yondu’s funeral, where he was buried with his trinkets and surrounded by people that actually cared for him. Even though Nebula and Gamora have reconciled she still decides to leave and attempt to kill Thanos. Rocket had contacted the ravagers to tell them what Yondu had done, I hope they would show at this funeral. As Yondu is prepared to be buried the Ravagers, lead by Stakar give Yondu a traditional Ravager funeral. It was a beautiful end for a well-loved character in this franchise.
James Gunn decided that one post credit scene wouldn’t be enough, he thought 5 was a better number. Nothing in them leads us into infinity wars, but what could possibly be in the future for the guardians. In the first one, we see that Kraglin, who was given Yondu’s arrow, attempting to use it but accidentally stabs Drax. Ravager leader Stakar reunites with this ex-team mate, who just so happen to be the original Guardians of the Galaxy from the 2008 comic run. We then travel a little in time as Groot is no longer a baby but a typical teenager, who is giving cheek to Peter. Stan Lee cameo in this movie was him telling stories to the Watchers, who leave him in the fourth end credit scene. The fifth scene was the one that could possibly be attached to future Marvel movies. Ayesha is seen licking her wounds after being beaten by the Guardians in front of a giant pod. She explains how she has created a new artificial being with whom she plans on destroying the Guardians with. She ends her scene by saying she will call him Adam. That's right people, Adam fricking Warlock will be, at some point introduced into the MCU. #NL##NL#
I’m always excited when a new Marvel movie is released but this one had my excitement level dialed to 1000. Having these characters more developed and a whole new journey laid out in front of me brings so much joy. I loved how this movie focused on family, the ones we have through blood, the ones we form through friends, the unlikeliest of people who help to define us. The introduction of new characters natural transition, which I think is helped with the theme of this movie. The casting of Kurt Russel as Ego was perception. I’m a big Guardians fan in the comics, and I thought not having J’Son Spartax as Quill’s father as he is in the comic was a big mistake. I’m quite glad they didn’t as this would have opened up things that really at this point doesn’t need opening. J’Son is a horrible person with a history with many Marvel characters, and to introduce him could possibly mess things up. I’m glad they’ve kept it simple and easy for the viewer to understand. I was expecting Baby Groot to be my favorite character, but in all honesty, Drax total stole the whole film. Every scene he is in is hilarious, even when he has some moments with Mantis, the literal and socially inept Drax comes bursting through like a rocket. Even through for me, Drax stole the film, everyone in it brought their A game to make another spectacular Marvel movie.#NL##NL#I may have missed a few references and little tidbits, but I do have another review on my podcast, which is also available on NRDFeed.com.#NL##NL#Let me know your thoughts and feelings in the comments. I would love to hear from you guys.#NL##NL#Until Next Time#NL#Peace, Love & Peanut Butter #NL#Sammie "}]
