[{"text":"BATMAN v SUPERMAN comes out in theaters and everyone freaks out. The screaming isn't from overjoyed fans excited for the next outing with their favorite superheroes; they are cries of sheer horror and terror at what has become of the symbol of hope himself, Son of Jor-El, the mightiest of all heroes, Superman. Batman is murdering people. Green Lantern is nowhere to be found. The Flash drinks MILK!#NL##NL#Ok, so I may have been exaggerating a bit, but it cannot be contested that many fans of the DC superheroes were less than thrilled about Batman v Superman. With critically low ratings, but an astronomical box office, Kevin Tsujihara, Geoff Johns, Zack Snyder, and the whole of the DCEU franchise would continue, unshifted and unphased by the poor reception of their universe kick-starter.#NL##NL##NL#SUICIDE SQUAD is release, and well... people appreciated BATMAN v SUPERMAN a little bit more. With an abysmally low Rotten Tomatoes score and critical reception on-pair with the Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez romp GIGLI, it seemed that the future of the DCEU was incredibly bleak."},{"list":[{"listType":"bullet"},{"caption":"MAN OF STEEL - OPENING WEEKING: $116.6 million \/ LIFETIME: $668 million \/ BUDGET: $225 million \/ RT score: 55%"},{"caption":"BATMAN v SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE - OPENING: $166 million \/ LIFETIME: $873.2 million \/ BUDGET: $410 million \/ RT score: 27%"},{"caption":"SUICIDE SQUAD - OPENING: $133.6 million \/ LIFETIME: $325 million \/ BUDGET: $175 million \/ RT score: 25%"},{"caption":"WONDER WOMAN - OPENING: $103,251,471 \/ LIFETIME (2wks): $453.6 million \/ BUDGET: $149 million \/ RT score: 93%"}]},{"header":"DID Wonder woman save the  DCEU?"},{"image":[{"src":"jen950138jenkins-.jpg"},{"caption":"GAL GADOT stars as WONDER WOMAN, directed by PATTY JENKINS"}]},{"text":"And then came WONDER WOMAN, which blew audiences and critics away and continues to bank at the box office, not only making bold steps in closing the ever present gender divide in Hollywood, but also proving that the dark and gritty formula ala Zack Snyder is not the way to go for characters that should instill love and hope in the world. While something of the nature of BvS would work in a finale scenario in an Marvel Studios film such as INFINITY WAR, we have not yet been introduced to Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and the like in a manner which allows us to recognize, sympathize, and fall in love with our heroes. We aren't at a point where we're rooting for them, or if a tragedy befalls them, we, frankly, give a shit."},{"image":[{"src":"won436712wonder-w.jpg"},{"caption":"The cast and crew of WONDER WOMAN (2017)"}]},{"text":"WONDER WOMAN changed this formula, presenting strong characters with realistic, recognizable, human relationships that we either have in our lives or wish to have one day. At that point, when Diana is faced with adversity or tragedy, we feel her pain. We root for the hero to kick the bad guys ass for making our hero feel that pain."},{"header":""JUSTICE LEAGUE" will determine the future slate for the dceu"},{"text":"Warner Bros is currently in the process of reshaping and retooling their DC films. After a personal tragedy suffered by director Zack Snyder, Joss Whedon took over the director seat to finish up Justice League. A seasoned director who amazed audiences and in many ways revolutionized cinema with Marvel Studios' The Avengers. It was recently announced that director Joss Whedon will also helm the upcoming BATGIRL film.#NL##NL##NL#Warner, known for being reactionary to fan reception in their DCEU films, undoubtly used Whedon's talents to punch up some of Wonder Woman's dialogue, reactions, and possibly even action scenes. Only time will tell what his involvement brought to the film when Justice League hits theaters NOVEMBER 17, 2017."},{"header":"THE CURRENT DCEU SLATE"},{"list":[{"listType":"bullet"},{"caption":"Gotham City Sirens"},{"caption":"Suicide Squad 2"},{"caption":"The Flash"},{"caption":"Wonder Woman 2"},{"caption":"Batgirl"},{"caption":"Black Adam \/ Shazam!"},{"caption":"Nightwing"},{"caption":"Justice League Dark (aka Dark Universe)"},{"caption":"The Batman"},{"caption":"Cyborg"},{"caption":"Green Lantern Corps"}]},{"text":"While all of these films have been announced at one time or another by Warner, not many have a solid release date. Warner is allowing the reception JUSTICE LEAGUE to determine how they move forward with a franchise. A smart move which will likely tend in their favor. If my suspicions serve me well, I believe we will see Wonder Woman take the mantle as leader of the Justice League, in the same way Captain America, or Iron Man depending on your team, lead the Avengers into battle. Cap, Tony, and Diana are lenses for the viewer on screen - lens, a film term to describe the viewers entry point into the universe. These characters serve as our guide into the strange world that is Marvel and DC. Warner has thus unsuccessfully delivered Superman as a lens for the audience, instead opting to use his power as a plot device - something as sinister as one of Lex Luthor's schemes."},{"header":"WONDER WOMAN v SUPERMAN : dawn of a better hero"},{"text":"Superman, arguably, saves a lot of people, but he also, arguably, causes the death of thousands of people. When Superman saves people in MAN OF STEEL and BATMAN v SUPERMAN, we feel no sense of joy or gratitude. It's this weird, hyper-realistic, "holy shit look at the flying dude" motif that works in a science fiction film, but not a superhero film. Diana and Kal-El are both essentially Gods, with a capital G, as opposed to Ego of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY: Vol. 2. They are virtually invulnerable, and as seen in recent images from JUSTICE LEAGUE, Superman can be resurrected from death with just a little bit of sunshine. You hear that, basement dwelling nerds! Take that laptop outside, you troglodyte!#NL##NL##NL#I digress. What makes Wonder Woman a better heroine archetype is her willingness to put aside all goals in the service and protection of life on Earth. While both Clark Kent and Diana share similar back stories, acting as renegade agents throughout their life, saving as many people as they can, Clark, Kal-El, Superman, whatever you want to call him that day, is conflicted by lack of identity on Earth. We don't know who Clark is because Clark doesn't know who he is. Is he Kal-El? Is he Superman? Is he Clark Kent? Who the fuck is this guy, and why does he have the powers of a God, being as conflicted and depressed as he is?#NL##NL##NL#Superman lacks a crucial ingredient for a hero - LOVE. It's something that Wonder Woman uses in battle, to literally and figuratively empower her. She goes out of her way, setting aside all other objectives, to save a small village, or aid a small force of soldiers. Diana loves all beings on Earth, and she knows where she comes from, and she's damn proud of it. Diana comes from a long line of protectors that have stood down when mankind needed them the most. When her elders chose inaction, Diana left her home, never to return, in service of humanity.#NL##NL##NL#The second vital ingredient is choice. While Superman also makes a choice to sacrifice himself in BATMAN v SUPERMAN, it comes after many years of him serving as a hero. It is the first time he is posed with a choice that would actually determine his future. Diana, from a young child, always wanted to fight evil.#NL##NL##NL#Having seen all of the DCEU films to date, who do you feel is a stronger representation of the heroic archetype? It is general consensus that Wonder Woman, in the hands of director Patty Jenkins, delivers the best examples of this archetype, a sentiment that is clearly echoed by audiences and critics alike."},{"header":"All You Need Is Love, Love, Love"},{"text":"If JUSTICE LEAGUE is to determine the future of the DCEU slate, Warner is typically reactionary toward critic and viewer consensus, and WONDER WOMAN continues to exceed expectation at the box office, it appears clear that the new face of the DCEU will be Princess Diana of Themyscira herself. A lighter tone has proven successful in critics eyes, and the hiring of director Joss Whedon is an indication that they will continue on this brighter trajectory.#NL##NL##NL#THE FLASH is still lacking a director, and a general direction for that matter, and with Ben Affleck stepping away from THE BATMAN as director, the entire project appeared to receive a page one rewrite. Echoes of a GREEN LANTERN CORPS film are ever present, but it appears they are saving that for long after the first iteration of the JUSTICE LEAGUE. Could they tap Whedon to do the GREEN LANTERN CORPS film as well as BATGIRL? What other films in the DCEU would you like to see Whedon direct? Sound off in the comments!#NL##NL##NL##NL##NL#For NrdFeed, this is Nick Goldman reporting.
