[{"text":"Actor Peter Capaldi and Showrunner Steven Moffat are going out in a blaze of glory. For the season finale they are bringing back some of their favourite adversaries from the past 54 years of Doctor Who. "},{"spoiler":"Medium"},{"text":"The big spoilers are that this episode features the return of John Simm as the Master, and the (original) Mondasian Cybermen. Neither of these would be much of a suprise to a Doctor Who fan though, as both had been heavily trailed by the BBC in order to push up viewing figures - leading to criticism in some quarters that they had given away vital plot points. This is an in-joke, as in the early years of the show the character was called "Doctor Who" in the cast lists, but only relatively recently have fans become militant about this.  "},{"image":[{"src":"spa631557spaceshi.png"},{"caption":"One immense spaceship: 400 miles long and 100 miles wide"}]},{"text":"#NL#The setting is a gigantic spaceship poised on the edge of a black hole, and the vehicle seems gloriously retro - like the work of classic era Doctor Who SFX legend Mat Irvine.#NL#The vehicle is trapped, and the power of the black hole is causing dramatic time dilation effects. #NL#Missy ventures forth to investigate, accompanied by Bill and Nardole, and encounter the blue-skinned Jorj."},{"image":[{"src":"mis828999missy-2.jpg"},{"caption":"Missy Who?"}]},{"text":"#NL#Things rapidy become tense, and the Doctor emerges from the TARDIS, but too late to save the day...#NL#The trailers promised that the Doctor would see one of his friends die, and with the words "Promise you won't get me killed" Bill is doomed to come to a tragic end. Or is she? Nothing in Doctor Who is ever quite that simple."},{"image":[{"src":"mr-833748mr-razor.png"},{"caption":"Who is Mister Razor?"}]},{"text":"#NL#Bill is abducted by strangers and taken to the other end of the ship, where she awakes in a grim hospital, full of patients in terrible pain. #NL#She is befriended by the unusual Mr Razor who takes care of her. For them months go by, while mere seconds pass for the Doctor, Nardole and Missy. "},{"image":[{"src":"spa838884spare-pa.jpg"},{"caption":"Spre Parts (2002)"}]},{"text":"#NL#The origins of the Cybermen were never explored in depth in the classic TV series. It was not until the audio adventure "Spare Parts" in 2002, that we learned how Mondas (twin planet of Earth) became home to a race of cybernetic beings. This has proved to be one of the most popular of all the Doctor Who audio adventures, frequently topping fan polls.#NL#The story was supposedly adapted into the TV story "Rise of the Cybermen" and transferred to a parrallel Earth, but it actually bears little resemblance to the original story. #NL##NL##NL#"World Enough and Time" however feels much more like the world of "Spare Parts" with a dark and twisted 1950s vibe, full of despair and poverty. The city inside the spaceship is suffering, and hope is lost. There is no way that humanity can survive, so they must change into something else..."},{"image":[{"src":"cyb27560cyber.jpg"},{"caption":"Mondasian Cyberman"}]},{"text":"The return of the original design of the Cybermen proves chillingly effective. Their brutal simplicity is far more unsettling than the ultra-high-tech versions of "Nightmare in Silver". The production team clearly has great love for the original 1966 design, and it is great to see it again."},{"image":[{"src":"cli620300cliffhan.jpg"},{"caption":"The cliffhanger ending..."}]},{"text":"#NL#The cliffhanger sees the return of the Master, as played by John Simm, alongside Missy for the first ever on-screen multi-Master story. #NL#The Master has retained his love for deceit and disguises, and a dramatic revelation. Some fans thought that his disguise was obvious, but others were genuinely surprised at who he was.#NL#Cleverly Moffat balances the crowd-pleasing dramatic revelations with an emotional core: Will Missy be able to continue her path to redemption, or will her former incarnation lead her back to darkness? #NL#And what will happen to Bill? Can she be saved?"},{"image":[{"src":"reg519618regen.png"},{"caption":"Regeneration?"}]},{"text":"#NL#The other major talking point is the dramatic opening shot of the Doctor in the snow apparently regenerating. Will this come at the end of this story, or is it a lead in to the Christmas episode?#NL#The setting in the snow could be a link to the story "The Tenth Planet" set at the North Pole, which saw the first appearance of the Cybermen, and the first regeneration. Is this a link to a rumoured First Doctor crossover at Christmas?"},{"image":[{"src":"bla823908black-ho.jpg"},{"caption":"The Doctor encounters another Black Hole"}]},{"text":"The first part of the finale is full of treats for fans old and new, but with a powerful emotional core. It has proved to be hugely popular with fans, who cannot wait to find out what happens in the extended final episode next week."}]
