[{"text":"Season 10 concludes with an episode that proves to be full of action, drama and humour. It has proved a great hit with fans and critics, and is a worthy penultimate episode for Peter Capaldi and showrunner Steven Moffat. "},{"spoiler":"Medium"},{"image":[{"src":"mas5669master-a.jpg"},{"caption":"Missy and The Master"}]},{"text":"#NL#At the heart of the episode are relationships: The season-long story arc of Missy's struggle to reform is resolved, as the dynamic between The Doctor and The Master comes to a climax after centuries.#NL#The Doctor's passionate speech to Missy and The Master to stand with him was my personal highlight of the episode. The Doctor and The Master had been best friends at the Academy, before becoming enemies. Could they finally be reconciled to work together again?"},{"image":[{"src":"bil312147bill-sha.png"},{"caption":"Bill struggles to resist her fate as a Cyberman."}]},{"text":"#NL#Bill has been converted to a Cyberman, but still holds on to her humanity. At the heart of her relationship with The Doctor is trust and friendship; they are not lovers, but a teacher and his student.#NL#The Doctor has promised to save Bill, but they both must accept that the process cannot be reversed. All season there have been hints that Bill would die, but would this be a genuine death?"},{"image":[{"src":"nar933758nardole.jpg"},{"caption":"Nardole saves the day"}]},{"text":"#NL#Nardole finally gets his chance to shine, after a season that seemed to be mostly scene-stealing cameos. His computer skills protect the children, and he becomes a leader. In a subtle parrallel to Missy's reformation, Nardole has become an unexpected hero. "},{"image":[{"src":"cyb183236cybermen.jpg"},{"caption":"Mondasian Cybermen"}]},{"text":"#NL#The armies of Cybermen were attacking floor 607, although (sadly) they were mostly the recent upgraded design, rather than the gloriously retro 1960s originals. The Doctor uses Nardole's software to defeat them, and seems to have no moral hesitation about blowing them all up - despite his protesations about not liking weapons."},{"image":[{"src":"mas802374master.jpg"},{"caption":"John Simm asThe Master"}]},{"text":"#NL#The scenes with The Master and Missy together were glorious, with Moffat's superb script full of clever wordplay. Both John Simm and Michelle Gomez continually besting each other, and being gloriously deranged. There were moments of great comedy, like The Master putting on eyeliner, or getting aroused at being threatened by his future self.#NL#Special mention to Gomez for capturing Missy's internal struggle on who to stand alongside."},{"image":[{"src":"thi400127third-do.jpg"},{"caption":"The Third Doctor"}]},{"text":"#NL#Both Moffat and Capaldi are fanboys at heart, and this episode is a glorious celebration of some of their favourite parts of the show's 54 year history. #NL#The return of The Master and the original Cybermen were the most obvious, but there were plently more. As The Doctor lay on the floor of the TARDIS with the red lining of his cloak aroud him, many fans will have been reminded of the Third Doctor and his cloak. "},{"image":[{"src":"wor572966world-sh.jpg"},{"caption":"The Sixth Doctor, Peri and Frobisher encounter Cybermen"}]},{"text":"#NL#This episode also delighted long time fans by confirming that there are multiple origins for the Cybermen, and bringing into canon the story World Shapers. This is a classic comic story from 1987 by the legendary Grant Morrison, that explains the origin of the Cybermen and links to an unexpected First Doctor story. #NL#One of my personal favourites, it also features Jamie McCrimmon and a shape-shifting penguin. What more could you want?"},{"image":[{"src":"bil991255bill-and.png"},{"caption":"Bill and Heather reunited"}]},{"text":"#NL#Bill's story comes to an (apparent) end, as she is reunited with Heather from Episode 1 "The Pilot".#NL#There were fears among some fans (myself included) that Bill would be returned to humanity by The Doctor using some "magical" Deus Ex Machina to fix everything - but the fact that this had been hinted at since Bill's first adventure was much more satisfying.#NL#Bill finally gets a romantic relationship after a number of doomed dates, and finds her (potential) happy ending."},{"image":[{"src":"fir40312first-do.jpg"},{"caption":"David Bradley as The First Doctor"}]},{"text":"#NL#Of course the season ended with a dramatic and powerful cliffhanger: The Doctor has been desperately holding back his regeneration all episode, but now it seemed to be finally upon him.#NL#The TARDIS takes him back in his own timestream to meet his original self. Both incarnations of The Doctor are in remarkably similar situations: a battle with Mondasian Cybermen has left them drained and just about to regenerate, but both refuse to go quietly, and want to hang on to their life as long as they can. #NL##NL##NL#What happens next? Well,we need to wait five long months to get the answer on Christmas Day, when we say goodbye to Capaldi and meet the Thirteenth Doctor. #NL#Counting the days already..."}]
